Books - July 2009

Books:

  • Dragon's Dagger - R.A Salvatore - It was quite good, though what the heck is the purpose of create strong fighter/blacksmith and then let him ride in the enemy's arrow and later impale himself on a lance? I had invented lots of other use for that character dammit and used someone else to take the shot. Maybe someone mary-sue hero who hasn't never got really hit. *grumbles * I could do better. =..=' ( 12.07.2009 )
  • Dragonslayer's return - R.A.Salvatore - It was nice ending for the serie and only flaw in plot was the current number of horse that got mixed. x'D I also hoped that the couple would had stayed on the land but no... they had to drag back into world they came, it was sort of sad to push the characters back, even neither really wanted to but they believed that leaving was for the best... and because of the family... Actually all the reasons that usually chain people on their place, habits and beliefs got mentioned.  *deep sigh * ( 19.07.2009 )

Books - June 2009

Books:

  • Darkly dreaming Dexter - - Novel/Book where the TV series called Dexter bases on. First time it is difficult to say which one was better; the original book which was great or series which also is great even it's damn difficult to believe the actor who played the role of Dexter brother Brian to be his elder brother... More it had suited that Rita's ex Paul had played that role. x'D They were almost alike after all... But this blog is not about series or movies I have watched recently... I think I like the idea of Dexter being himself as a sort of dark antihero. There's just way too much hero did this and hero did that so it begins to be boring. Or if it is from the murderer's or antihero's point of view the author usually hates the character and after reading few more pages so will usually the reader either begin to wish the antihero's quick death or end of the book or they toss the book in the corner and go to read something else. Not with this... No,no... This presents a person who sure is honest to himself and wonders about the life around him and actually does huge favor by hunting and putting down other serial killers. It makes him sort of different type of hero from polished hero stereotypes. And as for spoiler... LaGuerta should have died by Brian killing her and Dexter going after Doakes later... ;) ( 03.6.2009 )
  • Barry Trotter and shameless parody - Michael Gerber - I would lie if I claimed I didn't like it. It was fun and very very different from Harry Potter. I don't hate or mock Potter but the story was highly overrated though the movies were good. ( 11.06.2009 )
  • Barry Trotter and unnecessary sequel - Michael Gerber - It was much better than the 1th book and I did enjoy the parody of the wizard's game's extreme version. I know it might have been grose and terrible but that scene made me laugh.... ^^' ( 19.06.2009 )
  • Bored by The Ring - - Parody of Tolkien's LoTR and I must say it was shorter, less boring and hilarious stuff to read. Loru sorbusten herrasta in Finnish. ;)(22.06.2009 )
  • The Girl who luved Tom Gordon - Stephen King - This was good! What I do not surely understand why they had to rename the book here as The god of the lost ones... Eksyneiden jumala in Finnish... ( 24.06.2009 )
  • The Woods out back - R.A. Salvatore - It was interesting story but... Things that I noticed, actually few little bloopers; at the quite beginning Kelsey keeps talking about that he also needs to recruit a goblin thief and they need to somewhere and that thief is as important to his task as is kidnapping leprechaun, Mickey, human, Gary, and dwarf for blacksmith. Giant they meet by luck. -But they never go to seek that thief they need. * shock * Another thing that they forget is the giant scab that Gary killed in the cave before entering to dragon's castle. They were hungry and they were planning to take it or parts of flesh with them when they get back and have sort of feast... Well, they do get escorted out by the same way but the author could have bother to explain what happened to the scab... Did those lizard guards took or did they stop to get a piece of it or what?! But battles.... those Salvatore does describe well and book was enjoyable after all but I'm quite amused by to see sloppy parts in the plot that don't make no sense. O..O' (28-06-2009)

  • Paljaat luut, Stephen King ja kauhun anatomia ( Bare bones, Stephen King and anatomy of horror )- Tim Underwod, Chuck Miller - It’s a collection of interviews with Stephen King during 1979 to 1987. I must say that I did enjoy reading it and it was quite different from the usual books I like to read. ( I guess I always have to pick on a bit extraordinarry book and read it every now and then... Like Tulip fever, Anatomi... Sweet poison cook... and now this book of interviews... old interviews. ) The main thing that I learn, though I have know it with writing is that you better have fun while writing. x’) ( 31.5.2009 )

Manga:

  • Inuyasha vol. 44 ( 15.05.2009 )
  • Death Note vol. 12 - Last volume and.... Hm... Well, it was great till the end and getting a bit sad for seeing Mello being killed and Mikami. But for Light/Kira.... Bwhahaaha! Bet he never saw that coming what came upon him. x''D ( 25.5.2009 )

  • Leviathan 7 ( 13.05.2009 )
  • Leviathan 8 ( 15.05.2009 )
  • Leviathan 9 ( )
  • Leviathan 10 ( ) - Is it just me or is the author trying to mess this manga with alternative world. =..=' And don't you dare to claim that all that happened at his far, all the coolness, funny events, odd unique characters after one another are one coma patient's DREAM?! >..<' Oh, thanks for adding Bush and Saddam in this manga as well... No wonder it won't never be published in English. Not that adding them in hadn't been bad idea, it was quite interesting one. But bringing in the alt. world... Big no, no, no. I don't wish to get confused when seeing alt. versions of the characters already being so familiar after following them from 1th volume to 9th.

sunnuntai 3. toukokuuta 2009

Books - April - 2009

Books:

The Crow: Wicked Prayer -Norman Partridge - First novel basing on The Crow serie I have gotten and read and I must say this was good one. A bit unbalanced though; first loong loong predules and chace trough the desert lands and final conclusion squished in the last few pages like in a hurry. But still really really good.
I seriously got keen on the characters of the book on some level and shrunken head called Raymondo.... Yes, there is twitty shrunken head that talks in the novel and if you ask me he is the most best character in the whole story.
Though it makes me wonder are other The Crow series novels as good as this...
What I checked about wikipedia there seems to be The Crow movie carrying the same title as the novel but what comes out from the movie’s plot: movie and the book have absolutely nothing common, no common plot, no common characters, no common plot.... Nothing.

I would still want to see the movie though just for fun and to have my self-monologue commenting with it ; that didn’t happen in the novel, whatta hell they’re doing... that wasn’t in the original storyline... The director who made The Crow Wicked prayer should have red the novel. It had looked great as a movie without altering it at all. ( 04.04.2009 )

  • Trinity Blood - Rage against The Moons vol. 2: Silent noise - Tsuanoa Yoshida - I was about to add just word: AWESOME! But... It was a bit while before continuing reading of Trinity Blood novels and absolute worth of continue reading this serie. If you still don't know that Trinity Blood was originally a Japanice serie of light novels before adopted into anime and ROM serie that was adopted in manga format, check the novels out! But about this book, yes. Chapters Neverland and Silent noice/Overcount were adopted in episodes. Wendy was close to get killed in the novel + Leon hates children. Noelle does die in both; novel and anime... But Hugue did not appear to come to slice Isaak's gnome ( the gigantic worm ) in the novels. -Though there is plenty of him in the side story called Sling Blade... Explains his background a whole more. ( 17.04.2009 )

Annoying that manga isn't being translated officially in English.... ( or in Finnish ) because otherwise this would have ended in my shopping basket. But thanks that there are scans so I could read this at least. Hopefully they consider publishin this in at least English. -Found only Germany version from the bookstore and that doesn't much help at all! >..<'

Also tried to read petit Cosette but that just wasn't a manga I would want to read and my friend recommend to check out manga called Xxxholic but after reading one chapter I just bookmarked it to continue reading later.

Books - February 2009

Books:

  • Arto Paasilinna - Suloinen myrkynkeittäjä ( Sweet Poison Cooker ) - It was not the usual book I would pick up and read. Not at all. I think that I guess I am disturbed when I began to read Paasilinna's works. Neither I am much after murder stories. Or drama... Or Finnish drama.... It was about a little while of a life of old granny who got real thug as her nephew and two jerks as his friends. Well they were blackmailing the money out of the granny, had made and planned more crimes and made a lot quite grouse crimes and finally tried to kill this granny. Well, the granny got away from them after they had forced her to sing her last will. She then got interested of cooking poisons. For herself because she rather would have killed herself than let those crooks to get her life. She had help in the end tough and she had good luck with her. - The crooks died, one after another, pretty much by their own fault. One sat accidentally on her poison syringe and died. Second one thought it was just a drug and injected himself with it and got then pushed over the rail in the ship. x'D Third one then kidnapped her granny and tried to drown her but he got carless, managed to broke his leg and ribbs with ( airos ) when trying to sash the granny... And eventually by accident he died when ( airo ) drop on his head and smashed his skull... After that life was bit happier for the granny. :3 But when she died she end in hell ( apparently where all Finns and their close relative nations end ) where these three were waiting for her but she had help there too, her husband and her second husband and Devil himself. x'''''D What I learned from the last pages... Lady is Lady even in Hell. x'D Book was short, easy to read in three or two days but I got a bit amazed by how much stuff there was fit and squished in 195 pages. O.O' Story was grotesgue and not suitable for minors... unless they really think they can survive from it. It tells quite clear about that crime isn't worth it, neither drinking isn't worth it. While I was reading it I waited the crooks to die. Die very painfully and was ready to write fanfic about it sending my lovely flesh eating-people/things burrowing horse OC to play with that trio. So it brought up rather dark emotions towards crimes so I was delighted to see how they drop dead one after another. :3 ( 05.02.2006 )

Comics:

  • Neil Gaiman's Absolute Sandman vol. 3 -

Manga:

  • Vagabond vol. 4 ( 05.02.2009 )
  • Tarot Café vol. 7 - Last part of that serie and it was... well... Surprising. :3 ( 16.02.2009 )
  • Priest vol. 4 ( 16.02.2009 )
  • Inuyasha vol. 41 ( 16.02.2009 )
  • Death Note vol. 9 ( 25.2.2009 ) - Not sure when but at last week anyway...

Books - January 2009

Books:

  • Cressida Cowell - How to speak dragonese by Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III ( Finnish edition: Opi Lohikärmeskieltä - Hikotus Kauhistus Koljakala III ) - Third book of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III's adventures that if I don't remember wrong, I bought it from the online auction last year. I like the humor that the books have even many if the scenes sound a bit overdone. Humor and lovely dragons. x')  ( 03.01.2009 )

  • Derek Landy - Skulduggery Pleasant ( finnish translated it as Keplo Leutokalma ) - I had saved this book for a year and had a thought that now the back-cover text promises something way too good... It was way too good and I succeed driving my friends crazy when keeping telling them how good book it is. x'D There is a living skeleton as a main role. Really. x') Skeleton that magic keeps together. Skeleton who's original skull some trolls stole and he won new head in poker. x''D I thought I got your attention. x'''D He also portrayed to be very much alive like anyone who has healthy attitude on the life. He also seems to find some humor even when things get ugly. -Really ugly and now I don't mean yellow car he he drives when his Bentley is being repaired. x') Well... I guess the girl should be main hero and I guess she does good job too but it is clear that certain skeleton wizard has gotten my attention. Don't get wrong. The girl and skeleton make really great team and just add there some lovely scythe carrying guard and one seriously evil warlock, conspiracy and magic.... I want another dose of this soup, please. Anyone who's not afraid of death, skeletons or warlocks should read this book. Also people who want to read really amusing, funny adventure with magic and adventure and quests. Pay some time to consider of reading this. Last time I red something this good was Gaiman's The Graveyard book. ( 06.01.2009 )
